Do you want to know why I so passionately write wholesome stories that not only entertain the imagination, but convey and encourage the reader to learn of God’s hope for us?
Okay, here goes, This is my reason:
Are any of you as fed up as I am about the decline of wholesome reading material, wholesome films, and wholesome TV shows? Think about it. Much like a lobster, we have been oblivious to the turned up heat! I pray it's not too late.
I grew up during a time when wholesome shows and reading material abounded, which aided my learning and belief in a code of ethics; a knowledge of what was right and wrong. But now, the neighborhood store offers all sorts of entertainment devices with
covers displaying an illicit affair, suggestive language, or an aggressive and violent combat game for the sheer amusement of the buyer, though primarily aimed at the younger set. And then we have TV shows listed with titles like Revenge, Betrayal, Scandal, and even something called, Masters of Sex, among the other numerous
Right now some of you probably think of me as a wet blanket, but I am looking through the lens as a faith-guided woman, a good parent, and grandparent. I understand that there is a tremendous need for more wholesome material for this generation to offset the bad material being offered by the mass media industry (film, television, radio, magazines, newspapers, books, etc.). Most of the industry does not care that their advertising methods are pulling the impressionable away from right and wrong conduct. They do not care about our children deserving a code of standards set by God, as a teaching tool to counter the possibility of future criminal behavior. They do not care that our children are at risk of being bombarded daily by trashy material that can produce a cause and effect, resulting in negative actions.
If we fill our minds with vile images, words, and thoughts we will be drawn to that which is corrupt. Simply put, ‘garbage in, garbage out’. It is a fact that thought leads to action, and if we feed our minds with garbage thoughts our negative actions will surely follow. Perhaps we ought to be mindful of what we absorb and mindful of what we think about.
Some will consider my comments controversial. Be that as it may, I feel led by the spirit to write these concerns down as my Savior instructs. Whether you accept or dismiss the message is up to you. However, consider this; the American Academy of Pediatrics notes repeated viewing of violent television shows changes one's views and increases antisocial attitudes. As a personal note, I strongly believe it also puts our children at greater risk of becoming indifferent due to a lack of sympathy towards others. Is this what we want for our children and their children?
This is a big reason why I continue to write wholesome books. Thank you and may the peace of Christ Jesus be with you.
